Rowland was the first child that George Ward Challis fathered with Esther Eliza Maple. His birth was registered in the first quarter of 1874 and there are three entries on the page:

The third may have been a correction of the second. I think the Rowland spelling is the correct one as this is used in the index mentioned below.
