JOHN CORDY (c1695 - 1775)

John Cordy was baptised 27th February 1695 (recorded as 1694 as at that time new years started towards the end of March) at Wymondham with parents John and Eliz.

There was more than one family with a John Cordy married to Elizabeth in Wymondham at that time so I cannot be certain to which family he belonged. Investigations were not helped by the fact that mothers' names were not shown in Wymondham registers until around 1692.

John (1) married Anne Cooke (could be Coote) in 1668 and children John (1670), Charles (1673) and Elizabeth (1677) followed.

John (2) married Mary Basey in 1683 but she died in 1686. Mary baptised in 1685 was probably from this marriage. This John could not be the one that married Anne as Anne did not die until 1693.

A John (widower) married Elizabeth Sadd in 1687. As Anne was still alive this must have been John (2).

A John (widower) married Elizabeth Mann (could be Monn) in 1694 (recorded as 1693 - see above for reason). As Elizabeth née Sadd does not appear to have died this must be either John (1) or the John born to John & Mary baptised in 1670. As the groom was a widow it is unlikely to be the latter.

The only plausible baptism of Elizabeth Mann that I have found is 1670 at Norwich St Andrew. There are baptisms of Elizabeth Sadd in 1666, 1655, 1635 & 1620 but none of them at Wymondham.

Children James (1686), Anne (1692), John (1695), Elizabeth (1698) and another child baptised in 1706 whose name is illegible in the register could be from either family.

Burials of John Cordy took place at Wymondham in 1700 & 1719 while burials of Elizabeth Cordy took place there in 1700 & 1717.
