DESCENDANTS OF JOHN CORDY
GRANTED FREEDOM OF THE CITY OF LONDON

Many descendants of the John Cordy born in the late 1600s and shown in the family tree were granted the Freedom of the City of London. Prior to 1835 it would have been necessary for them to belong to one of the livery companies. A common method for gaining entry to a livery company was by apprenticeship. Sons of members were also entitled to become members.

The list includes the following:

  • William Cordy (1771) - Needlemakers
  • John Cordy Baxter (1783) - Needlemakers
  • William Aldous (1803) - Needlemakers
  • William Cordy Nelson (1806) - Needlemakers
  • John Cordy Crouch (1818) - Needlemakers
  • Henry Aldous (1831) - Haberdashers
  • Nicholas Morritt* (1789) - Broderers
  • John Cope Folkard* (1811) - Goldsmiths
* These were not descendants of John Cordy but husbands of descendants.

John Cordy Baxter was apprenticed to William Cordy and John Cordy Crouch was apprenticed to John Cordy Baxter.

William Cordy was elected Master of the Worshipful Company of Needlemakers in 1786 and John Cordy Crouch was Master around 1874.
