THE "WIVES" OF EDWARD FROST
Edward appears to have had (at least) 13 children as follows:
| Child | Mother | Mother's maiden name from GRO |
| Jane | Ann | |
| Mary Ann | Ann | |
| Sarah | No baptism found | |
| Rebecca | Alice | |
| Edward | Alice | |
| Eleanor | Eleanor | |
| Ann | Ellen | |
| Thomas | Ellen | |
| Susan | No baptism found | Cowderoy |
| Mark | No baptism found | Cowderoy |
| Alfred William | Eleanor | Cowdery |
| John | Ann (I believe this to be incorrect*) | Cowdery |
After fathering all these children he married Ellis Cowdery!
A number of family trees on Ancestry believe Alice, Eleanor and Ellis to be the same person. There seem to be good reasons to support this:
- I can find no trace of a baptism for Eleanor Cowdery or Ellis Cowdery but there is a baptism in 1797 of Alice Cowdery whose father, John, was a cordwainer.
- The mother's maiden name in the case of some of Eleanor's children was Cowdery or Cowderoy.
- An Alice Frost was buried in 1882 aged 84 (=1797/8) although the GRO (typed) record says 81. She is Ellice aged 72 in the 1871 Census living with her son Alfred and his wife.
- If Edward and his first wife, Ann, separated (rather than Ann dying) this could be why he did not remarry until much later (but I have not traced a likely death record for Ann).
