DURRELL

...and lots of variations in the spelling!

Tracing the Durrell ancestors in the 17th Century at Great Bedwyn is something of a nightmare! There are marriages of a William Durrell (if they really existed) and others which I have failed to find. There are at least 3 William Durrells in Great Bedwyn at that time and matching their burials to the right William was difficult, particularly as it appears that Probate for one of them was somewhat later than the death.

  • William Durrell married Dorothy (as Dority) in 1644 and their son, William, was baptised in 1665.
  • Dorothy was buried in 1680 (March 1679 on the old calendar)
  • In 1684 Mary Durrell was baptised having been born to William & Bridget but I have not found any trace of a marriage. A William and Bridget, married to each other, died in 1715 and 1725/6 and from Bridget's will it is apparent that she was born Bridget Knight.
  • The only Bridget Knight I have found married Justinian Durrell (who died in 1679) in 1665(6). It could be that Justinian's widow, Bridget and Dorothy's widower, William, then married (or even lived together without the need to change her name!) and I have assumed this to be the case. Mary, daughter of William & Bridget Durrell, was baptised in 1684.
  • In 1687 Anne Durrell was baptised having been born to William & Anne but I have not found any trace of the marriage. The baptisms of Mary in 1689 and of William in 1691 followed. I have assumed that this William (the father) is the one born to William and Dorothy
  • Anne, wife of William, was buried in 1694.
  • In 1697 William Durrell married Susanna Piper.
  • In 1697/8 Thomas Durrell was baptised having been born to William & Susanna. There are more Durrell baptisms up to 1714 and I assume that these are all issue of Susanna (the registers give only the father's name - William).

The chart below shows what I believe the family tree looks like.    = denotes a marriage and ~ denotes a partnership where I have yet to find a marriage record.
