The Bedfordshire Gaol Register has a record indicating that William Newell was sentenced to either 3 months in prison or the payment of £4/14/- (£4.70) for "Refusing to obey an order in Bastardy". This was in 1821 and he chose to pay the fine. He married in December of that year.
