I have not found a baptism for James Cowlard in Bedfordshire around the time concerned. There are several Cowlard baptisms in the Blunham area so James could have been a member of one of these families.

The most prolific was John & Susan(nah) with baptisms of John (1737) and Joseph (1739) at Southill and of Susan (1741), Mary (1743), William (1745) and Elizabeth (1748) at Shillington.

Other baptisms were

• Sarah (1733) at Silsoe (father Robert)
• Mary (1735) at Southill (parents William & Mary)
• Mary (1736) at Silsoe (parents Robert & Mary)
• John (1739) at Southill (parents James & Sarah) and
• William (1752) at Dunton (parents William & Elizabeth).

Bearing in mind that in those days the first son often took the father's (or grandfather's) name, James and Sarah looks the most likely family.
