SARAH STAMPSON or STIMPSON?

Sarah Stampson appears to be the only Stampson in Sussex. However, there are Stimpsons living in Woolbeding which is about 2 miles North West of Midhurst which, according to the 1851 Census, is where Sarah was born.

I believe that Sarah is the Sarah Stimpson baptised at Woolbeding on 4th December 1793 but have no idea whether the change of name was an error by the vicar at the time of the wedding or whether there was a deliberate name change.

I found a dozen or so baptisms of Stimpson children at Woolbeding between 1757 and 1803 and a few baptisms of Stempson children at Midhurst (2 miles from Woolbeding) between 1698 and 1734. I didn't find any Stempson/Stimpson marriages in these parishes prior to 1798 except for that of Mary Stimpson in 1778.

The Sarah baptised on 4th December 1793 was the daughter of Thomas and Jane but I cannot find a baptism for this Thomas. I strongly suspect that this Thomas is the son of Thomas Stempson baptised 1725 and Sarah.

The Stempsons and Stimpsons are shown in a disconnected section of the family tree.
