For some reason John Cope was known as John Pope at the time of his military service and his wedding. This is revealed in a marginal note alongside the baptism entry for his son Joseph in 1823 which reads as follows:

"John Cope and Sarah Stampson were married in the Subdeanery Church Chichester 14 Dec^r. 1815. John Cope their eldest son was born at Chichester 25 Nov^r. 1816. James Cope 2^d. Son born at Gosport 5 July 1820. The father was in the 82 Reg^t: Foot & afterwards 2^d. Bat: Veterans & always went by the name of Pope."
