There does not appear to be a Robert Tootell (or anyone else with a similar surname) baptised at St Thomas the Apostle, Exeter (where he was married) around the time concerned. There are 2 people baptised Robert Tothill in 1742 (one at Heavitree - just outside Exeter - and one at St George) as well as two in the 1730s in Devon. It does not appear possible to determine which, if any of these, is the right person.
There is the burial of a Robert Tootell, clerk of the parish, at St Thomas the Apostle, Exeter on 2nd December 1819, aged 70 and I have no reason to suppose this is not our Robert Tootell. This would make birth around 1749. A couple of websites indicate he is the Robert Tootell christened at Falmouth in July 1748. This seems to be a giant leap without further evidence. The majority of Tootell baptisms around this time were in Lancashire.
